ALL PRAISE TO BE GOD!!
Here is just a quick update on this past weekends Christmas Party! Let's just say Praise be to our Most High God! He truly had His whole Hand through it all! It came together just beautifully! We had well over 200 studens that had came through the camp once already to come for this Christmas Party! We had some kids three to be exact travel as long as 5 hours to come for this Christmas Party! The day started off with pretty much a regular Worship service but at the camp. We had some High School students come and lead worship, and then another missionary from about an hour east of Davao City come and speak. He did a great job of speaking and sharing the Gospel clearly with little distraction for being in the hot heat and outside! Praise the Lord though 20 or more students came forward to learn more, ask questions, or wanted to become a follow of Christ! So it was very very exciting to see these students step out like this. And then several more come up after words and asked the speaker if it was okay to ask Jesus into His heart from his seat! WOW! Praise the Lord!
Then in the afternoon after feeding all 200 plus staff and other helpers, we had a great eventful afternoon. Tara was in charge of video taping the whole day event, and I prepared a video for them to all watch to close! And by the Lord's timing only right when we had pretty much everyone out and we left...the rain and floods came! It rained so hard for the next two hours, it was like the Lord was just holding it back perfectly!
Thank you so much for your Prayers, support, and may you be excited as we were to see this event unfold only to the same God we serve call, challenge, and change hearts all over the world!

So we are praying for big things to happen. We are asking for your Prayers for final preparations, planning, and the whole event. This is a great way to reach out to the youth of Davao City, Philippines! We are very excited! Pray that God will have his hand in the whole event, touching the hearts of youth that do attend, and that He will be the one to have the true Christmas Party!!! Tis the Season!

Bible Studies, One on One, and more...
Wow our ministry is going pretty well. We have started back up with the Weekly Bible Study with both the men and women in the Outland Adventure staff. Which tara and I both help lead these groups. Where the men keep on asking some really great spiritually questions. And just last week we talked about a really big issue being baptism! They were really questioning, asking, and really responding to us discussing Baptism. This is a hard issure since well 90% or so in the Philippines is Catholic!
Also, I am still trying to meet with our local Sports Ambassadors team. I have been able to build relationships, befriend, and minister! It's been a exciting time to meet with each guy separately and see where along they are in there faith! Please just keep praying that the Lord will give me the wisdom to share what He wants them to learn or be challenged with. Tara is slowly getting involved more in Faith Academcy, but is currently having some problems with scheduling and planning. The plan was she would be teaching or help teach a sex education class at Middle School, but some problems have came up and they have given the job to another person. So to say the least she is a little frustrated about this small bump in the road! We just continue to pray that the Lord will show here where and what she can do!
We ask for Prayer in all these issues, and Praise the Lord for all your faithfulness in supporting us through this year in the Philippines!

Christmas around the Corner
With Christmas just around the corner. We are excited, but to be completely honest it's still hard to be away from family and friends. Though we know that that the Joy of the Lord will carry us through this Season! We are right now trying to get our quarterly letter out and hopefully have it sent out and be in your hands by Jan.
Prayer:
pray that we can find and lean on Christ through this Christmas
pray that we can get the internet in our house to feel reconnected with family, friends, and supporters!
pray that we can continue to ministry each and every day!

Thanksgiving
Our Thanksgiving was pretty good. Thanksgiving though not feeling anything like Thanksgiving, and it was still very hot. We tried our best and in the evening went over to another missionaries house with about 35 other missionaries to celebrate and feast on some delicious turkey!!
Though we were away from family and friends. We are first thankful for them all, thankful for this time to remember what all we could really be thankful for! And it was a true blessing to have alittle thanksgiving and good Christian fellowship! The Lord is good and we thank Him everyday!

This has been on my heart this week!
Colossians 1:9-14
"9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."
While we are here in the Philippines, and since we have planned or learned about this trip. We have not stopped praising, thanking, and worshipping God for all of you who have made this trip possible. As we reflect on this week of Thanksgiving though we are in the Philippines and it's hot and I really had not thought about Thanksgiving until the Day of being Thursday! Though these verses have been in my heart and mind of lately. We want to say Thanks to You to being Faithful in your call and listening and obeying to God and helping us through your support of prayer! And we also echo this verse to ask God to fill us all with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding...so that we may live life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God. Rather this been in Greenfield, Indianapolis, Davao City, or wherever This is our heart!

update
We are so very sorry we have not had the time or the internet to update our blog! Though a short and fast update. We are officially in our a new place, we are slowly getting settled in, but just for the record sometimes it takes time to get things. For example we ordered the phone about and about a week later went by the came out to install, then another week to hook it up. So we have a land line phone number now which we are excited about! Though we are still without any real chairs, couch, or tables. Though the missionaries had purchased before we come a bed, matress, dinner table and chairs, and some other basic items. We are hope to be getting some living room chairs, couch, and ordered some good old fashion bean bag chairs for the upstairs extra room! We hope they will be ready sometime this week...when they told us it would be probably a week long to get. Plus, we are still waiting for the internet, which would be a big help to get re connected first with you, friends, and family! Though everything else is going pretty well. A lot to update you about our ministry, relationship, and future ministry/living this year in the Philippines!
Please pray that we continue to minister to the filipino people through sharing and showing Jesus through everyday living and building relationship with many! Also, pray that we can really get settled in and call our place home. Lastly, pray that we get the internet to keep you updated...also our family would love to hear from again via emails!!!

Holiday Week continues
Well, this week has been sort of slow so to speak. Monday and Tuesday was a Holiday which you can learn more about in the previous blog. Where Today being Wednesday we started moving stuff into our new house. We are hoping to be moving in officially, and staying over there tomorrow. So we might be away from the computer for while!
But, the rest of the week will be slow again...because believe or not there is another Holiday in the Philippines which is Idul Fitri which marks the ends of Ramadan. And yes this is a national known holiday, and schools are out, and many businesses close as they were Monday and Tuesday. So as crazy it sounds it's been a slow week. Just to give you an idea of how slow and how many holidays and days off there has been. The local School for both Faith Academy where Tara will probably be working soon at, and the Philipino schools have only one full week without any days off this whole month of Nov! Believe or not it's true!
Future plans, to official get moved into our new place, and get settled. I am trying to schedule a fellowship of swimming with the Sports Ambassadors guys which again are the 10 to 12 local filipino's that will go out and minister through a game of basketball, but more locally around in Davao City or other places that invite us. So hopefully we can plan this friday as a day to fellowship while others in the country will take the day to eat since Ramadan is done!
Probably sometime next week, Tara will be getting into schedule in working with Faith Academy, and she has this girls retreat coming up. Which she is pretty much in charge of, or really helping with it a lot.
Also, coming up...you can be in prayer about. We are having Sports Ministry conference here in Davao City. More details to come about at a later time!
I hope this helps you keep you up to date on us!
We thank you all you again for your great love, prayers, and support that many have shown to us through this time of ministering here in Davao City, Philippines! We hope you can continue to partner with us through this year! God is good all the time!

Holiday Week

CROWDS AT THE GRAVEYARD - true Philipino culture!!!
October 31st and November 1st are special days in the Philippines. They are called all Saints day, and it's a tradition for all Filipino's to visit there dead family members grave sites. This is a very Catholic Country, and the tradition of it is to pray your dead family member to heaven since they might be in purgatory. Popularly identified as "All Soul's Day", this is the day set apart in the Roman Catholic Church for the commemoration of the souls of the faithful dead. It falls on the 2nd of November albeit in this country, most Filipinos celebrated it as early as November 1. The tradition is said to have started in the 10th and 11th centuries and was based on the (Catholic) doctrine that "prayers of the faithful on earth may help purify souls in purgatory". The offering of prayers and masses are solely for the repose of the souls who died not in the state of grace. Prayers and masses are offered to ease whatever pain and suffering they are in. To complement to such thoughtful cause, loved ones offer a spray of flowers and lighted candles. Flowers serve as a living memory reminding us that once these people had remained close to us and they, like us, had once been fascinated by the beauty and color of life. Lighted candles likewise signify that the love, hope and joy they shared with people they had left behind shall be kept forever burning and alive even though they may have found their destiny somewhere or even in the arms of the Heavenly Father.
The stores and native markets were packed with people in long lines trying to buy noodles, packet mixes, and coffee and beer. Candles filled the stores in all shapes and sizes. These were all snapped up through the day.
The crowds started gathering early Monday at the graveyards. The police blocked off many of the roads around the town. The same thing happened all around the Philippines and even closed down several main hi-ways in Manila. The news reporters started covering the graveyards and great excitement was experienced through the country.
Monday night candles were used to light the graveyards. Most graveyards here have large concrete enclosures. Some even have kitchens and eating areas. The families come from the town, nation and overseas to spend time with the dead. Death feasts are planned and people camp around the graves with canvass and sleeping mats. Food stalls spring up all around the graveyards. As the night goes on more people arrive. This continues through the next day. This is all Saints Day. That is the major day with most stores, businesses and schools closed. The Philippines comes to a stand still as people gather at the graveyards. Discos are even held at a lot of the cemeteries to pass the night. There is heavy drinking, card playing and gambling through the night. The police are there in full force and this year many soldiers were stationed around our town because of the fear of terrorists and rebels.
Tuesday afternoon were crowded and people were rushing in with flowers and candles to meet friends and relatives. If someone was dead for a year the tomb is sometimes opened and the nails and hair trimmed of the body. Then five years after the person is dead this is done again. Some people tie up the bones in little bunches then seal the tomb permanently. Lots of crying goes on even if the departed has been gone for 30 years or more. Often some dark practices are put on during the late night since the Philippines is full of superstition and ritual.

Tata, Cherril, and Chen Chen

This is Tata, his wife Cherril, and there six month old baby Chen Chen! I just wanted to post a picture up of Tata since you have probably read about me and him going out doing the follow ups! They are a great family, and have alredy been a blessing to both Tara and I! Tata, keeps me safe when going and doing the follow ups, when everyone tries to offer me everything especially food. I was able to go to there church this Sunday and hang out more with this great family! Please keep them in your prayers as well as Tara and I. Tara and his whole family do a lot of ministering through Outland Adventures and he is one of the two paid staff at Outland Adventure. He does all the follow up ministry, and trying to connect campers that have gone through Outland to local churches, starting up Bible Studies, and encouraging! This can be a long and hard process sometimes! Please keep them in your prayers.

Weekend Apart
This weekend we will be spending our time apart. Tara, is up in the mountains where it is said to be cooler, but let me remind you it's still the Philippines. And actually I am surprised that Tara or I have not melted away! Though, she is going with about 30 other women, 10 women coming from Wheaton, IL to share with them. They are calling this a women's retreat to continue to grow! I am very excited, and hope she can meet, share, and grow with these women. Hopefully befriend some of them as well. Tara helped planned, prepare, and schedule some parts of this trip and she was very excited to go on this. Please be in prepare for her through this retreat!
Where, as I am stuck in Davao City, playing basketball bright and early at 7 am on Saturday! Though I am excited...I have forgotten to mention that Last weekend we had our first Sports Ambassador fellowship, and was able to meet all the local Filipino players. They gave Tara and I both a great and warm welcome, and were excited to play with me. We were able to play two games last weekend just exhibition games without sharing the gospel. This was in a league that the sports ministry that I am working with has already set up, and being ministered too. But, the reason we were able to play in the league was because a team canceled for good, and they other teams were still wanting to play games!
So please be in prayer for me, playing, meeting, and hanging out more and more with these local guys. There is so much to tell you in detail about different situations, experiences, and just life in the Philippines so far. Though so little time, not enough words to explain, and well it's just difficult to express everything! If you have any questions at any time you can always email us! Please feel free to email, or send regular mail, or hopefully we will get a vonage phone set up soon. So then you could even just call us! But, just a quick warning already Philippines is 13 hours ahead!

praise, prayer, and thanks!
First Praise the Lord! For all He has done in our and around our lives already!
We thank Him for safety, while traveling, and let's just say traveling sometimes in the Philippines is not the safest! I mean there were times where I knew if I told first my wife and second my family of nurses what I was doing...they would think I was nuts, crazy, or just plain stupid! But...The Lord is faith and sees us through it!! I am talking more about riding a motorcyle up a mountain for about 45 minutes with me and two other filipino's with out an helmet, and just thinking I am going to die if I flipped off this thing! Praise the Lord all is well!!
Praise the Lord for the whole house situation working out more and more everyday!
Praise the Lord for His presence, and knowing we are here for His purpose though sometimes it's hard to know this..Though more and more He is confirming and showing us His ministry!
Praise the Lord that we got our visa extended with out any problems or questions asked
Praise the Lord for this free country where we are able to attend Church
Praise the Lord for the message that we heard on Sunday which was very encouraging to us both
Praise the Lord that both Tara and I are slowly but more and more adjusting to everything around us, and to the people, and the culture!
Praise the Lord That we are both get more and more invovled with the ministry here!
We ask for prayer in the following:
Tara has a women's retreating this coming weekend starting Thursday and until Saturday...pray that she can meet more women, be encouraged, and just grow in this time.
That we will both continue to adjust, prepare, and get ready for the people that the Lord want us to meet, and minister too. Adjust to the people, there way of living, there lifestyle, and there culture!
Pray that we can build relationships to help encourage people in there walk and connecting them to Jesus!
Pray that we can get moved in and settled coming the first of week of Nov. Pray for a smooth transition, for both families.
Pray that Eric can meet with some of the guys on the local sports ambassador basketball team, and start building relationship with them.
There is a sport ministry retreat coming up in Nov for the guys. Rich is planning and doing a lot with, please be in prayer for this event!
We thank you for all of your support, your prayers, and all that you have done. We want you to know that we have been faithful stewards of your support. We thank you so much for all that you have done, and pray that the Lord will continue to be faithful and providing for all our needs! We can not say enough thanks to all our great supports! Thanks again so much!

Since we have been house sitting
Since we have been house sitting we were away from the computer. We had no internet connection. But much has happend since then!
I really don't know where to start!
We are still looking around for a church to attent regularly. We have only gone to one so far because of different events, but I think this Sunday we will be going to a new one.
The church we went to the past two sundays is where Rich and Marla go to. It's good, but there is no AC so sometimes is hard to focus and get everything that the preacher is saying. Though it was still good.
Also, I have already in less then two weeks in the Philippines went to a wedding, and last Tuesday one of the guys that I have been going out and doing the outreaches with his name is Tata. His lola which is grandmother passed away, so Rich and I attended the funeral. It was another good culture experience! Much more to say about that later!
Well, then This coming week Tara is headed off to a women's retreat, and has helped plan and prepare it some with Marla. So we are staying pretty busy! Though I must keep mentioning that busy in Asia culture and Philippines culture is not so task focused. It's more relationship, getting the job done, and sometimes the job takes time to do and get to and really a foreign thought for Americans! So slowly, but Lord Willing we will be doing more and more!
If you have any questions or just want to wrote us you can always email or even mail us letters! We would love to hear from you!
Sorry this was sort of random thoughts, but then again that's what a blog is all about!

We have been away for while!
Sorry we have not been updating for while. Last week we were house sitting the house that we will be moving into. If that makes sense, and sounds crazy. To keep you up to date. We had a house that we were moving into, but this family was interested in this house, and so we are doing a house swap with them. They have a little one year old daughter, and the wife is expecting in Feb or March! So they are living in a town house with stairs and no yard. Well, they were wanting a single house with a little yard for there kid and soon to be kids. Plus, they have been doing some outreaches with some poor families and the town house is more western so to speak...so we felt that it was pretty good! So That's the deal with that! I know may have been asking and praying. Just to keep you up to date on that!

First outreach

Wednesday was my first real outreach. This was step three of a six step process that Outland Adventures is doing now. To go through the step to fully understand is like this:
1. two staff will go to the school to prepare. Tell the kids what to bring this that and the other.
2. the school comes through the camp, and there they have fun, learn leadership skills, team skills, and the Gospel is shared at the end!
3. follow up with the students by staff.
4. follow up with students by staff and a local minister from a local church.
5. follow up with students by staff and minister again.
6. follow up with students by local minister only
This is a long process, but really trying to connect students that are wanting to learn, grow, or just ask questions to go to the local church and minister. This is a new process, and has just been starting out.
So this past Wednesday I went with a staff from Outland Adventure to two different schools that had 15 students from each school that went through the camp. And we were able to pass out material on how to read the Bible. Then in the other follow up we will actually be collecting the material to see if they are doing it, or to see who is interested and what they have learned and talk about it.
Though sometimes it seems long, hard, and lot of time to do. We are talking about a different culture here. Where as American has the git-r-done idea....well it's just a little or should I say a lot different here in the the Philippines. This is take your time, relationships first, take some more time, and then we will think about it. Not so interested in the actual task where as Americans it all about getting the task done!
Some new experiences on this first outreach:
First Jeepney experience - a jeepney is best explained as a US army jeep, put two benches in the back with enough room for 12 people, and paint it all kinds of different and crazy colors. Then stuff 20 passengers on those benches one including a big white American like me, add four in front, hang a few more off the roof and drive down the road like maniacs. That's you my first jeepney ride. Oh did I forget to mention wearing jeans (to be polite for the schools) in 93 degree hot and humid weather! A picture of a jeepney is above.
Walking down the streets to get to the school while everyone is staring at you which is becoming the normal already, but this was new. Having people, kids especially yelling at me "hi Joe"
Getting to spend a little more time with Tata and the culture it was a lot of fun, and a learning and growing experience! Praise the Lord Also, to know that being an American and going along on these trips helps them get a little more since they have an American. They get a little more into the school, the kids want to talk to us more, and it's just being used by the Lord..even if it just because I am big, and white skinned!

Worshipping God in new ways
Sunday we went on a boat trip. We boated out to another island and stopped by what is called the wall and did some snorkeling. Then we moved to the beach and ate lunch. We saw some dolphins in the distance. Then we went snorkeling again. We saw lots of great sea creatures. We saw many starfish, colorful fish, and lots of coral. Who would have thought of getting a sunburn in October. It was great to see God's creation.
We have a praise. We had a house set up here. However, Sadie's teacher another missionary here was interested in finding a house with a little bit of a yard and no stairs. As of right now they live in like a townhouse that has only two bedrooms and stairs. So they looked at the house that we were going to maybe move into and they were very interested in it. We saw their house and needless to say they house is a little more western than the house we were going to live in. We had hoped that maybe we could just switch. We met with our landlord this morning and he said it was no problem. The Miller's (the other family) talked to their landlord and he said it would be fine. So the switch is going to happen. This is a praise because we have been praying that it would be possible. Praise God. We will be moving in around the end of October but will be house sitting for them for about a week next week.

Filipino Wedding
On Saturday, we went to a Filipino wedding. Let me first explain a little about the Philippines. Almost everyone in the Philippines has a helper. Bebing was the bride. She is Rich and Marla's former helper. Another thing about Philippine culture is everyone is late. The most important person is always last to show up. The wedding started almost an hour after it was supposed to, but that is normal. The ceremony is similar to a traditional American wedding except for one big thing. Everyone walks down the aisle and there are sponsors. Sponsors are couples that the bride and groom sort of look up to. Rich and Marla were sponsors and Sadie was a flowergirl and Tristan was the Bible carrier. They also discuss all the symbolism of everything. It was very interesting, but I felt very sorry for Bebing. I now know how hot wedding dresses can be and the church was not air conditioned and the reception was outside. It was a very nice ceremony and reception. Everyone was very friendly.

Chaplain Dinner
Friday evening we were invited to a Chaplain Dinner. One of the missionaries that is part of Sports Ambassadors has a army chaplain ministry. So this dinner was after a few days of Americans coming and speaking, challenging, and encouraging the Philippine chaplains! So we just got invited to the dinner for last meal so to speak. It was very very nice, and they had some great entertainment that Tara and I both really enjoyed. They sang and danced showing one of the Philippine tribal culture. It was very interesting, and educational. The Fellowship was great as well, as we visited with a Colonel who had relatives that lived in Morristown, IN! Small world after all.
Life in the Philippines
Well, we have finally like I had mentioned earlier are getting sort of settled in with Rich and Marla (if you don't know them look at ealier blogs). We are trying to learn the different culture, study about living abroad, and just take it all in. It's sort of hard to describe everything. Let's just say, busy streets, strange smells, and a lot of rice! That would be a great start and picture.
This being the first week while in the Philippines for the first time ever. It has been a slow start that has gone by fast from my point of view, where as Tara's could be different. She did mention that when she is busy doing things it goes by fast. We have also learned quickly that things take time to do, to get, and to go somewhere...it's just not the quick convience of American over here.
Tara, has this week, been at the school she will be very invovled in alot of the days. She has got to meet the Principal, most of the teachers, and already knows everyone name in the Kindergarden class. Though I will mention there are only 6, and one of the little boys it's his family we are living with!
Eric, or should I say myself...I have been out to what's called Outland Adventure which is ropes course almost just like in the States, where they have high ropes, low ropes, challenging, and etc. Where it's team building, character building, and etc. If you don't know what I mean...check out there website at www.outlandadventure.com . Here, I have been able to meet with many of the staff, and was able to go to the gospel night where they are able to share the gosple message of Jesus Christ to a public school. This program is set up to have corporations, schools, and any group from the Philippines to come and learn, share, and be challenged! Well, long story short! Rich Henderson the missionary we are working with just recently took over this ministry, and know already has many more schools interested. And Praise the Lord there is a school of 850...800 students, and 50 teachers/staff...and they want the whole SCHOOL to come and do this rope course! So Rich has decided to break it down into groups of 40 for the every Thursday and Saturday from Dec through March! So that's right every Thursday and Saturday a group of 40 will be at the ropes course...that's a lot. Though Praise God there are able to come through, and hear the gospel.
More to come about this ministry...though this upcoming week...I am already planning to go with the two of the staff to do a follow up of one of the schools that have already gone through the ropes course...please be in prayer for this!
Tara will be working more and more at the school which is called Faith Academy, and please be in prayer for this!
Much much more to come later...about Friday Culture experience we attended a American/Philippines Army Chaplain Dinner, Saturday was our first Philippino wedding, and Sunday was fun in the sun. I will try to get Tara to explain some of these for you upcoming soon!
Love you all!! His Therefore Yours!

Last Week
This is our last week before our big and we do mean big flight over the ocean! Through times of craziness, excitement, stress, planning, and we still have that perfect peace through it all! We are trying to tie up all loose ends before we leave and of course PACK!!!
We had a great Sunday Service at Park Chapel Christian Chruch which was our last Sunday there for a whole year. Though, we were very blessed to have such great support, prayer, and so many hugs! We cannot say enough about our home Church!
Now it's time for us to get ready!
Please come back and we try to be updating this regularly to keep you posted on our ministry!
